First, please check if your other wireless devices (computer, smart
phone etc.) are able to establish an internet connection. If these other
devices are able to connect and your Olive 4/Olive 2 are still unable to
connect, the Olive 4/Olive 2 may not be getting the correct DNS address
from your router. To remedy this, you will need to retrieve your network
information and manually enter it into your Olive 4/Olive 2.
To retrieve your network information on your PC, please follow these

As your music collection grows and you personalize your Olive 4, it
is a good idea to make a back up to an external hard drive. Currently
Olive products are only compatible with external hard drives formatted
in FAT32.
The following list contains external drives pre-formatted in
FAT32. Please note that the hard drive you select should be equal to or
greater than the capacity of your Olive 4. (i.e. If you have a 1 TB
Olive 4, your will need at least a 1 TB external drive or larger.) To
start the back up process, from the home screen on your Olive 4, use the
following pathway: SETTINGS ---> SYSTEM SERVICES ---> BACKUP
Your Olive 4 will prompt you to connect the external drive using the USB
port on the back of your Olive 4. Once connected, the back-up will
automatically begin and a red circle will appear in the lower navigation
bar on your Olive 4 touchscreen. Please note that a back up may take
several hours. You will know that the back up has completed when the red
circle has disappeared.
If your Olive 4/Olive 2 does not respond when you use the touchscreen or navigation buttons, please do a soft reboot by holding down the Standby On/Off button for 5 seconds until the LCD screen turns white. After the system reboots, please take the following pathway from the Olive 4 main menu SETTINGS ---> SYSTEMS SERVICES ---> CALIBRATE TOUCHSCREEN. This will bring you to the touchscreen calibration. Once complete, tap the touchscreen and begin enjoying your music.
Top of pageIn the rare circumstance that your Olive 4 becomes completely
unresponsive or will not properly boot up to the home screen, you most
likely need to run a system recovery using the system recovery CD that
came with your Olive 4. Should you not be able to locate your recovery
CD, you may download the ISO disc image by clicking hereDownload: RecoveryCD.zip
Filesize: 114.9 MB.
Please note that running a full system recovery using the recovery CD
will completely erase the hard drive on your Olive 4. We strongly
recommend that you contact Olive support at 877-296-5483 before starting
a system recovery to assess if it is necessary.
To begin the system recovery, please follow these steps:
In the event that your Olive 2 becomes unresponsive or prompts you to
run a system recovery, you will need to run the system recovery via the
USB port in the back. Please download the recovery fileDownload: RescueBackup.bin
Filesize: 14.8 MB to your desktop and copy it to a USB memory stick. The USB
stick must be formatted in standard DOS format. Plug the USB stick into
the USB port of your Olive 2 and the system will begin the recovery
process.
In the event that your Olive 4 does not recognize the CD you are
loading for import to your library, please check that your Olive 4 is
connected to your network and to the internet. The Olive 4 will
automatically attempt to retrieve album artwork from the Olive online
database and requires an internet connection. (Click here for instructions on network setup.)
For album artwork that was not automatically imported, you may conduct
an internet search (i.e. Google, Yahoo, Bing or Amazon are good album
art resources) and manually upload the artwork using MaestroDownload: en_olive_userguide.pdf

discs, DVDs nor will it recall album artwork from a CDR.
Your Olive 4 imports music information through both the Olive online
proprietary database and from the internal database on the Olive 4. Your
Olive 4 must have an internet connection to access the online database.
In rare cases your CD may not be in the database, thus you will need to
manually enter the associated music information through MaestroDownload: en_olive_userguide.pdf

First power down your Olive 4 completely by pressing the green Standby On/Off button until the touchscreen is black. Then switch off the main power on the back on the unit. Hold down the EJECT button and flip your main power switch back on. Continue to hold the EJECT button through the boot-up procedure. The CD should eject once the Olive 4 has booted up.
Top of pageFirst make sure the file system is FAT32. If the Olive still can't see the USB-Device please re-format the usb-device using an operating system else than Windows 7 or Vista.
Top of pageThe recovery procedure when using a Windows 7 / Vista formatted FAT32 external hard drive is a little different than for use with a drive formatted by other operating systems. To begin the recovery, power the Olive OFF by flipping the switch on the back. Next, connect the USB external hard drive with the necessary recovery files on it to the USB port on the back of the Olive. Before flipping the power switch to the ON position, hold down the Select button and the Down button on the Olive's front navigation buttons. Continue holding the Select button and the Down button and power the Olive ON. The onscreen recovery prompt will automatically initiate the recovery. Be patient as the recovery can take several hours.
Top of pagePlease turn off your Olive 4/4HD completely (using the power switch on the backside). Once you turn on the Olive 4/4HD again please keep the EJECT button pressed during boot-up. If the CD still does not eject please contact your place of purchse for service.
Top of pageUsing the navigation buttons directly to the right of the display, press and hold the Left facing arrow for 2-3 seconds, and the unit will ump back to the main menu. If this does not work, hold down the power button on the front of the Olive for 4-5 seconds until the screen refreshes to white. This will reboot the Olive and you should have control of the system again.
Top of pageAfter the Olive 4/4HD has been rebooted several times the system will automatically verify that all software components and music files are still ok. This can take some time, so be patient. Do not reboot the Olive during the System Check, otherwise the System Check will restart from the beginning.
Top of pageBoth the Olive 4/4HD and Olive 2 employ a power saving sleep mode, i.e. one should use the power button on he front side to put the device into sleep mode. In case you will not use the Olive 4/4HD or Olive 2 for an extended period of time (e.g. vacation) Olive recommends to turn of the device completeley. To do so, please put the device into sleep mode first, then turn off the power switch on the backside (Olive 4/4HD only) and unplug the power cable (Olive 4/4HD and Olive 2).
Top of pageUsing the remote control or volume setting on Olive 4/4HD to adjust volume down 1 step, then adjust up 1 step. The volume will level permanently.
Top of pageAdjust digital volume control to maximum level, and make sure Mute is not enabled.
Top of pageOn the TV, please set manually to 480p, and make sure auto-scaling/picture correction off. If still no display, try a secondary HDMI port on TV. If you have the HDMI connected to a receiver, reconnect the Olive directly to the TV with the HDMI cable. Lastly, try different HDMI cable.
Top of pagePlease contact support, and email brand and model of the TV.
Top of pageThe Olive 4/4HD and Olive 2 take about 40 seconds to boot up from a cold start (i.e. when the power is turned off). During boot-up the operating system, the CD database, as well as all other settings (network, CDRW driver, HDD etc.) need to be initiated to be avaialble for immediate access during operation. Olive recommends to put both the Olive 4/4HD and the Olive 2 into power saving sleep mode when not in use (tap the power button), this way the boot-up time only takes a few seconds. The Olive 2 should only be turned off completely when not in use for an extended period of time (e.g. when leaving on vacation).
Top of pagePlease try the following: 1. Calibrate touchscreen (navigate to Settings> System Services> Calibrate Touchscreen, and tap the screen in each corner as the + appears). 2. Soft reset by holding down the power on the front of he Olive for 5 seconds until the screen refreshes white. Once the unit boots to the Date/Time screen, tap the screen in the center and the Olive should boot to the main menu 3. Contact support via email at care@olive.us
Top of pageIf the system is busy encoding CDs in background, or any function that uses lot of processor-performance, this can cause the unit to run slower than usual. Also you may need to calibrate the touch-screen (navigate to Settings> System Services> Calibrate Touchscreen, and tap the screen in each corner as the + appears).

As part of our international growth strategy, we realized that it was more important to focus on our brand name, Olive, and discontinue the use of sub-brand names like Opus and Melody. Our new naming highlights the Olive brand and uses product descriptors (Hi-Fi Music Servers and Hi-Fi Players) that we feel best describe our products. Since we're all about making the enjoyment of high fidelity digital music simple, we decided that our product names should be more simple too. If you own an Opus or Melody, you never know, these may be collectors' items some day.
Top of pageIn 2007, Olive adjusted its product naming to focus on the Olive 4 for digital music storage and the Olive 2 for networked players. As such, the MUSICA line was transformed into the Opus No3 and the SYMPHONY line into Opus No3S. The high-end Olive 4 became the Opus No5 and the SONATA was transformed into the Olive 2. The objective was to reinforce the Olive mission to deliver a perfect music experience and to make it easier for customers to distinguish between the products.
Top of pageOlive currently does not support any third party clients such as SONOS, Logitech etc. The reason herefore is the proprietary extended metadata information which allows Olive devices to deliver a richer music experience. This is not supported by other clients that use the standard UPnP protocol.
Top of pageUnfortunately Apple does not allow 3rd party suppliers to copy music onto an iPod. The only legal way is to use Apple's iTunes software.
Top of pageCurrently the Olive 4/4HD and Olive 2 do not allow to stream music from Apple's iTunes as Apple uses a proprietary DAAP standard (not Upnp), but iTunes will see the music stored on your Olive (with the exception of FLAC) and allow playback through your computer.
Top of pageRight now only backup, restore, software updates & recovery. Importing or playing of music from external USB drives is nt yet supported.
Top of pageThe Olive 4 reads and can import music from standard audio CDs. It can't read SACDs and DVD-Audio.
Top of pageWAV, FLAC, AAC or MP3. We suggest that you store your music in the lossless FLAC format, as it maintains the full sound quality of the original recording but requires approximately half the storage space of the original CD WAV file.
Top of pageAudio CDs and MP3 CDs.
Top of pageA lot! Refer to this chart on Olive 4 storage capacity to determine which Olive 4 is best for your music collection. In the unlikely event you need additional storage, please contact us to check on available hard disk upgrade programs.
Top of pageYes, the Olive 4 has an import folder that is visible on your home network. Simply drag & drop audio files into this folder and you'll be able to access and play them on your Olive 4. The files must be supported formats and DRM free.
Top of pageNo, this is a restriction of the iPod.
Top of pageSure, but you will need to digitize them first. Look on the web for a service to make this easier for you or find an efficient tool to do this yourself.
Top of pageThe Olive 4 offers a number of ways to access your music that you should find quite familiar. Each piece of music has tag or metadata information associated with it, such as composer, artist, title etc. This allows you to organize your music around these dedicated fields and to quickly find your music in the the following categories:
Yes, the Olive 4 was designed to be both a music library and to distribute music throughout your home. You will need a player, such as the Olive 2, to receive streams in every room in which you want music. The Olive 4 supports up to 10 streams wirelessly or 20 streams through a wired Ethernet connection.
Top of pageYour Olive 4 is a great value because, unlike most stereo components, it improves over time! Our software updates ensure that your Olive 4 offers more features and becomes even easier to use.
Top of pageTo update the software of the Olive 4, first make sure the Olive is connected to the internet. Then, navigate to Settings> System Services> Software Update. Confirm the onscreen prompt and the Olive will look for the latest version and install. Once installation is complete, the Olive will reboot.
Top of pageThe audio gain on Olive 4 is slightly lower due to the low-voltage DAC design.
Top of pagePlease make sure the device (e.g. Home Theater Receiver, DAC, Amplifier etc.) that is connected to the HDMI or digital outputs of the Olive 4HD supports playback of HD music formats (such as 24-bit/96, 88.2 or 176.4 kHz). Try to play back music in standard CD quality (16-bit/44.1 kHz) and see if the music is played back. If the music plays back your device does not support HD music.
Top of pageThe digital input is used to run your other audio sources (with a digital output) through the DAC of the Olive 4HD to improve the sound quality of the other devices. The other audio sources would need to have a Coaxial digital output to connect to the Olive.
Top of pageOn the Olive, navigate to Music Sources, and select Digital In. If you have a digital device connected to the Olive's Digital In, the audio of the digital device will run through the DAC of the Olive 4HD. In most cases, this will improve the audio quality of the digital device.
Top of pageThe Olive 4HD supports 480p, 800x480 at 60Hz.
Top of pageThe Olive 4HD supports up to 24bit/192khz on the HDMI output.
Top of pageThe Olive 4 and 4HD supports audio CDs only, not Super Audio CDs, DVDs etc.
Top of pageThe Olive 4/4HD can only import standard audio CDs.
Top of pageThe Olive 4/4HD can only import standard audio CDs.
Top of pageThe Olive will rip CDs as WAV, FLAC, AAC and MP3 formats (320bit & 128bit). For the storage and sound benefits, Olive recommends using the FLAC format, which offers CD quality playback and uses only about half the storage capacity of the uncompressed WAV format.
Top of pageNo, music playback can start once the files have been encoded on the hard drive.
Top of pageIn order to pull the album art from the online CD database, an internet connection is required for the Olive. If an internet connection is available, but you are still getting no album artwork, then the artwork is not in the online database. You will need to manually add the artwork using the Maestro interface
Top of pageIf the album information is not being found by the Olive, confirm the unit is connected the internet so the Olive can use the most current database to look for the data. If the Olive is connected to the internet and still is not finding the data, then the info is likely not in the database yet. You can manually add/edit this data using the Maestro interface.
Top of pageRipping a CDs takes about 5-8 minutes. If importing as WAV, then the CD will eject and the import is complete. If you are importing in a format other than WAV, the first part of the process is the ripping, which is followed by the process of encoding. The encoding process will continue in the background after the CD has ejected. The encoding process takes about 15-20 minutes per CD. While the encoding is in process, you can continue the import of more CDs, however the operation of your Olive 4/4HD might slow done as the encoding is a very processor-intensive operation.
Top of pageThe length it takes to import a CD depends on many factors such as the total length, the number of tracks, the quality of the disc (e.g. scratches cause the CD drive to use error-correction) and additional features (e.g. additional content for PCs). A standard CD can take anything between 3 to 7 minutes. Once the CD is ripped onto the Olive 4/4HD it takes about another 15 to 20 minutes to transcode the CD to the audio format you have chosen in the CD IMPORT SETTINGS (unless you have chosen the uncompressed WAV format).
Top of pageCurrently the Olive 4/4HD does not allow you to rip single tracks only. Olive is working on adding this feature in the near future. For now, just import the entire disc, then go back and delete the unwanted tracks.
Top of pageCurrently this is not possible and the original format is kept when the same CD is loaded to the Olive 4/4HD again. To change to a new format one needs to delete the album from the library first, and then import the CD in the new format.
Top of pageThe Olive can burn CD-R with gapless playback, or with gaps between tracks, and can also burn MP3 audio CDs.
Top of pageBurning a CDs takes about 5-8 minutes.
Top of pageIn rare circumstances it can be that the CD database has several CDs linked to the same "fingerprint". In this case the Olive 4/4HD will choose one CD automatically, which can sometimes be incorrect. If you want to change the information or album artwork please use the MAESTRO software.
Top of pageOnce a CD is inserted into the Olive 4/4HD it first looks up the CD in the internal CD database to provide useful information such as album, artist and song titles. If the CD is not found in the internal CD database the Olive 4/4HD searches for the information in Olive's online CD databse (if your Olive 4/4HD is connected to the internet). The whole process can take a few seconds.
Top of pageOlive uses FreeDB for its basic metadata, and its own proprietary databse for extended music information.
Top of pagePlease see images on pages 13-15 in the user manual for the functions of each of the navigation buttons.
Top of pageThe Olive 4/4HD is made to look great anywhere in your home and is usually part of your stereo system. Plug it into the amplifier like any other audio source and you're ready to go. See page 7 in our User Guide for detailed instructions. Link the Olive 4 into your home network and you can even stream music to your whole house - up to 10 different wireless streams in parallel or up to 20 streams when using a wired connection.
Top of pageThe Olive 4 supports up to 16bit/44khz on the analog output. The Olive 4HD supports up to 24bit/192khz on the analog output.
Top of pageThe Olive 4 supports up to 24bit/96khz. The Olive 4HD can support up to 24bit/192khz on the digital outputs.
Top of pageThe Olive 4 supports 16bit/44khz on the USB output. The Olive 4HD can support 16bit/44khz on the USB output.
Top of pageTo update the software of the Olive 4, first make sure the Olive is connected to the internet. Then, navigate to Settings> System Services> Software Update. Confirm the onscreen prompt and the Olive will look for the latest version and install. Once installation is complete, the Olive will reboot.

Top of pageFirst make sure the file system is FAT32. If the Olive still can't see the USB-Device please re-format the usb-device using an operating system else than Windows 7 or Vista. Please wait 5-10 seconds after the Olive 4/4HD asks you to plug in the external hard drive. if done too quickly, the Olive won't recognize the external hard drive.
Top of pageThe recovery disc will completely format your Olive 4/4HD' hard drive and reinstall the operating system. All your music and personal settings (playlists, favorites etc.) and the local CD database will be erased. This is why Olive recommends to do a backup of your Olive 4/4HD first before you use the recovery disc.
Top of pageOnce a backup/restore has been initiated the Olive 4/4HD will show the percentage complete. Once the backup is complete, the status on the Olive will show 100% complete.
Top of pageBackup operation is not incremental. It deletes whatever is on the backup drive then performs a new backup of the entire Olive 4/4HD library again.
Top of pagePlease contact Olive support first, as this will delete all content and will erase the internal CD database.
Top of pageYou can update via USB stick by downloading the files from the following link, http://www.olive.us/contact/software/installation.html and follow the installation instructions. Also, you can update the software directly on the Olive via the internet connection. To do this, navigate to Settings> System Services> Software Update, then select either USB or Network depending on your connection type
Top of pageDepending on how much content is on your Olive, the backup can take several hours. Olive recommends that you start the backup in the evening to run overnight.
Top of pageThe restore will take about as long as the initial backup took.
Top of pageAs your music collection grows and you personalize your Olive 4, it is a good idea to make a backup to an external hard drive. Currently Olive products are only compatible with external hard drives formatted in FAT32. To start the backup process, from the home screen on your Olive 4, use the following pathway: SETTINGS> SYSTEM SERVICES> BACKUP Your Olive 4 will prompt you to connect the external drive using the USB port on the back of your Olive 4. Once connected, the backup will automatically begin and a status indicator will appear on the Olive screen, showing how far along the backup process is. Please note that a backup may take several hours.Once the backup is complete, the status on the Olive will show 100% complete.
Top of pageOlive recommends using a dedicated HDD and must be in FAT32 format. Here are a couple links that will allow you to format an external hard drive with capacity upto 2TB as FAT32: http://www.brothersoft.com/fat32formatter-168057.html http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format
Top of pageMaestro is pre-installed on all Olive 4/4HD units, and to access it, just type xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8163/maestro.php into your web browser. (just replace the X's with the Olive's IP Address). Please note; Maestro has been optimized for use with Firefox web browser.
Top of pageThis is not currently possible. The USB connection is only for backup & restore of your music library.
Top of pageFor PC: To import to the Olive from your computer, you will need to do the transfer over the network connection (wireless or ethernet), but USB won't work yet. Once the Olive is on the network, go to your PC and open a Run Command line from the start menu. Once the Run Command line is open, type the following: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx just replace the x's with the Olive IP address. This will pull up the import folder that you will drag and drop the music from the PC to. The files will then transfer to the Olive. To Import from your MAC: -Open a FINDER window (not the spotlight search) -Click the GO option (next to File, Edit, View, etc.) -Select the option 'Connect to Server' -Type in smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (replace the x's with the IP address of the Olive 4/4HD) and click connect This will pull up the import folder where you just drag and drop your music to transfer to the Olive 4/4HD.
Top of pageThe supported audio formats are: WAV, FLAC, MP4,MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless
Top of pageThis usually occurs during the transfer of WAV files. WAV files do not have the ability to retain the meta data during the transfer from one device to the next. Other formats will retain the meta data on transfer.
Top of pageNo, this is a limitation of the iPod. Apple does not allow 3rd parties to copy music from iPod, except through iTunes.
Top of pageSure, but you will need to digitize them first. Look on the web for a service to make this easier for you or find an efficient tool to do this yourself.
Top of pageMost MP3-based internet radio stations will work, also URLs with suffixes .pls and .m3u will work.
Top of pageStart playback of the station, and press the Select button on the Olive and the option to delete will appear.
Top of pageGo into Internet Radio and select Add New Station. The Olive will then prompt you to enter the station name. After you select Save, the Olive will ask you to enter the URL for the station. Once saved, you can find the custom added stations in the Favorites category under Internet Radio.
Top of pagePlease update the Olive to the latest software and check that the network connection is stable. To update the software, navigate to Settings> System Services> Software update. Follow the on screen prompts and the Olive will look for and install the latest software version.
Top of pageAlthough there are thousands of internet radio stations available today Olive has decided to limit the selection to stations that meet certain quality criteria (bitrate, metadata etc.). You can always add your own radio station with the ADD NEW STATION feature.
Top of pageThe quickest way to browse internet radio stations is to highlight the category (GENRE, REGION etc.) and then use the touch-screen to scroll-down in the RIGHT column. This way the Olive 4/4HD/Olive 2 does not load all radio stations of each category and scrolling goes very fast. Once you have reached the subcategory of your choice (e.g. GENRE > ROCK) then a simple click onto the SUB-CATEGORY loads the full list of radio stations. Select the station you want to hear, and the playback will begin.
Top of pageIf it is an internet radio station that you have added yourself please make sure that a) it is in a supported format (.m3u or .pls), b) it is active (you can simply verify this by entering the same link into a standrad software such as Apple iTunes). If the radio station is provided through Olive's standard radio station list please reload the station list and try again. Please also make sure your network has no firewall installed that blocks port 8000 and 8001.
Top of pageThe Olive supports streaming with music libraries shared through Twonky (version 4 and higher), Tversity and XMBC.
Top of pageNo this is not yet possible.

Top of pageSome functions of your Olive device are only available if it is connected to the network and the internet. Network access is required to play internet radio, get album artwork for your music, or access shared music libraries on you Mac, PC or NAS. It also allows you to conveniently download software updates directly onto your device.
Top of pageThe connection to your network is influenced by many factors. First, please make sure the Olive is located in close proximity to your router. In ideal environments WiFi 802.11g (Olive 4 and Olive 2) has a maximum range of 120 feet (32m), 802.11n (Olive 4HD) can have almost twice the range of 802.11g. This range, however, is drastically reduced by the number of walls in between the router and the Olive 4HD, and the material and thickness of these walls. WiFi also has very limited stability in vertical direction, i.e. it is better if your router and your Olive device are on the same floor/level. In addition to the distance to your router the amount of network bandwidth taken by other network members (e.g. PCs accessing the web), distortion by microwaves and cordless phones can cause stability problems. In cases of stability problems we dofirst recommend to bring the Olve device closer to the router or extend your newtork with an additional router if the router is located on another level. You should also connect all three WiFi antennas to your Olive 4HD, the Olive 4 and Olive 2 (as does the Olive 4HD) can also use 5dBi WiFi antennas that provide extended network reception (antennas must have reverse SMA connection).
Top of pageYour Olive device will work with routers that support 802.11 b/g/n. Usually older router models do not always comply with the IEEE 802.11 standards and we do recommend to upgrade to a new model if the router is more than 2 years old. Regarding enryption modes the Olive 2, Olive 4 and Olive 4HD support most common modes.
Top of pageFirst, please check if your other wireless devices (computer, smart phone etc.) are able to establish an internet connection. If these other devices are able to connect and your Olive 4/Olive 2 are still unable to connect, the Olive 4/Olive 2 may not be getting the correct DNS address from your router. To remedy this, you will need to retrieve your network information and manually enter it into your Olive 4/4HD and Olive 2.
Top of pageNo, this is not possible.
Top of pageIf your Olive 4 is unable to automatically establish a network connection, you should first ensure your security encryption settings are compatible with the Olive 4/Olive 2. If your router came with a setup utility disc, please re-run this disc to enter your router's administrative settings and configure your security password to a compatible mode listed below. For other routers, please refer to your manual for instructions on how to view/edit your wireless router security settings. The Olive 4/Olive 2 supports the following security encryption modes: For Apple Airport Express, Extreme or Time Capsule NONE WEP WPA2 PERSONAL For Non-Apple Brand Routers (D-Link, Linksys, Netgear) NONE WEP-OPEN 64 Bit (10 Char. Hex.) 128 Bit (26 Char. Hex.) 40/64 Bit ASC II (5 Char.) 128 Bit ASC II (13 Char.) WEP-AUTOMATIC 64 Bit (10 Char. Hex.) 104/128 Bit Hex Open (26 Hex Char.) WPA-PERSONAL TKIP AES WPA-2 PERSONAL TKIP or AES Should you still encounter problems connecting to your network, please note answers to the following questions and contact Olive support at 1.877.296.5483. Are you using a wired or wireless network? What kind of router do you have? (Brand, model & b/g/n type) What type of security setting/password are you using?
